Panels from “Funeral for a Friend!” (Marvel Transformers #26)
I’ve always loved this issue, and I love it more now that I see it as the first Ratchet spotlight we’ve had since way back in issue #8 or so. The whole dumb death of OP storyline is given a poignant send-off here as we see what an Autobot funeral is like.
Meanwhile, Ratchet broods on his own failure to repair Optimus and the rest of the damaged Autobots (who were, oddly enough, damaged by Optimus). The Mechanic is a fun villain to watch, and he must have been popular, because he’ll come back a bit later. Ratchet once again overcomes his own weakness, a theme we’ll see return again and again, all the way up to the end of the story.
Also, odd bit: All of the Autobots that were captured and disassembled by Circuit Breaker are magically back to normal in this issue. No one ever explains how they were recreated after being built into an enormous franken-robot.
